Brian first joined Dr. Jah as the full-time bassist in 1994,
although he had sat in a couple of times for Dave Woolworth
before that. He stepped aside a few months later, but kept
showing up to sing backup, play percussion, or fill-in on
bass as needed. He rejoined the band for good in 1997. Some
of the songs that Brian's written are also in the Dr. Jah
repertoire.
His involvement with Dr. Jah precedes his bass tenure, as
he was the recording engineer on Black
and White, and sang backup on Twist
One Up.
Before joining Dr. Jah, Brian was bassist and shared vocal
duties in Armonk NY-based Bootleg, along with future WEQX
and WPYX
DJ "Joel Marshall" Rubin. He and drummer CJ Schermerhorn
left Bootleg in 1987 to form the proto-jam band, Free Association.
Dr. Jah and Free Association played together at numerous
parties and shows, where they would jam and sometimes switch
bands entirely while maintaining the groove. To complete the
connection, Black
and White was recorded at Free Association Studios
(now Chase Studios) in Mt. Kisco NY. At the final Free Association
show in 1992, the opening act was Dr. Jah & the Love Prophets.
Brian still plays with Joel in the Brain
Darts (the heir of Bootleg) between Dr. Jah gigs. They
began recording work in Dave's studio in November 2004 to
capture some of the Bootleg/Brain Darts underground classics.
